Description

In the 1400s this generously proportioned mortar was hand carved in a Warwickshire gritstone and resided at an estate near Stratford-upon-Avon for many years. Hence, when William Shakespeare was just beginning to make his indelible mark on literature in the late 1500s this handsome vessel was nearby and already into its second century of use.
With lovely quartz cabochons and a light speckling of lichen over its hard, pale-honey stone it makes a lovely planter with a small drain hole (which can be stoppered if required) added at some point of its 600 year life.
