Description
Intriguingly hand carved in gritstone from the Derbyshire Dales. Its original incarnation, in 1600s or earlier, was most probably ecclesiastical as a rustic font or stoup - its slanting, octagonal, undercut carving being too complex and refined for agricultural or horticultural use. Much later the base of this vessel was drilled (c1800s) to drain, rather than hold. water as it became re-purposed as a planter.
