BOXWOOD BOULES
Carved box tree root, S France, early - mid 1800s

£100 the two

Dimensions

10.5 - 11.0cm (4 - 4.5")

Description

Two provencales boules carved from root wood of the Box tree in South of France, dating from the early to mid 1800s. One is bare, the other retains just a few nails ("clouts") which were hammered into the surface to give grip and protection from damage in play. They are richly evocative of the hands that deftly pitched them day in, day out, year after year some two centuries ago in the squares of provencal villages at a pace of life quite different from today and make fascinating decorative and atmospheric items.
