Description
A diamond shaped bird bath chiselled in Purbeck stone from Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Naturistically carved by hand as a free form, rustic two piece bath this is a lovely, characterful and highly unusual piece from the 1800s. Jurassic age Purbeck stone comprises inumerable small fossilised shells which now decorate and give their classic, stippled texture to the carved surfaces. A rich, honey cream hue is retained on faces shielded from the weather, a grey fleck appears on the more weatherside flanks of the basin. These colours blend extremely well with a wide variety of other stones around the country.
Combining an irregular, triangular x-section column and diamond basin the piece looks refreshingly different from each angle. Provenance from a Dorset garden, late 1800s.
