Description
A complete set of six "The Davidson" hoops and "drill", as patented in 1898 by FH Ayres, the pre-eminent maker of croquet equipment of the period. Extremely rare to find the "drill" included (especially as here in perfect condition) - used to set the guide holes in the lawn to prevent hoops themselves becoming hit and damaged by hammers.
These cast iron, "carrot" pointed, hoops are vastly superior in every way to bent iron and are used in tournament play. Each hoop is still structurally perfect and showing exactly the right amount of patination expected from 125 years of being played and looked after.
When not in play the set makes a decorative and lightly structural feature of a lawn - even through winter, evocative of summer games, warm sunshine and friends.
The pine box is thoroughly sound with mortise-and-tenon construction and brass handles.
PS : we keep a selection of antique winning posts, balls and mallets if required, please ask.
