Description
Carved life size in lignum vitae (a wood denser than water, so not intended as a decoy) with simple but sophisticated, distilled lines of form. It appears to be the work of an exceptional stylist and is known to have come from France.
Extremely tactile, free from superfluous detail and with great poise and character. A crack has appeared along one wing edge but does not detract.
In real life the grebe is a diving duck of the rivers and lakes - always alert, sleek and graceful.
We date this carved version to c.1900.
