Description

A hand-carved pair of unique and magnificent stone finials. Originally from the Duke of Bridgewater's (1736-1803 and creator of the first canal) estate at Worsley, near Manchester. Their parent house is long gone but these finials remained, part-submerged, in a private garden within the original manorial grounds. The carving detail is immaculately preserved - fine tooth combing of the domes and chisel cut framed panels to each face of the square bases. Though some 250 years old their simple yet sophisticated form fits a variety of garden esthetics, including modern, and their warm colour and lichen patina settle the eye. They look exceptional bookending the start of a path or flight of steps. Cheshire sandstone c 1780.
