Description
A large and superb pair of gate finial balls hand carved in a hard, honeyed-red sandstone with lichen and moss patina. Both have the original fixing holes, one has weathered to slightly ovoid, with two "flats" for resting stably on a surface. Their colouring blends particularly well with Ham stone, Cotswold stone and old brickwork.
Set on a lawn, courtyard, flower bed, pillar or wall they bring simple decorative shape of great power and serenity. Dating from at least 1700s, more probably earlier still.
