Oval Terracotta Salter
Exmoor, Devon. c 1860 Sold

Description
An oval salter in terracotta with a contrasting, honey coloured, glazed interior. The distinctive shape was only ever made in Barnstaple, North Devon between 1850-1890 for the farm houses of surrounding Exmoor. These oval salters are a favourite of mine as they are so versatile as planters indoors and outside or superb for parties as a drinks cooler. This particular salter has two holes (original, not drilled) in the base which can be corked if required watertight (cork bungs supplied). Nowadays very scarce to find entire, this example has lovely lichen and is in excellent, completely sound condition and is fully frost proof.
