Description
Hand carved from a dense, close grained, sandy-pink Scottish stone in rare lozenge form, with four shallow-raised handles. A smooth exterior, polished by handling over the centuries contrasts with the pocked interior basin. Originally a mortar or vessel, this wonderfully solid, tactile piece suggests a variety of uses indoors : culinary, decorative - or both. Scotland 1600-1700s.
