Description
A large and beautifully proportioned terracotta farmhouse salter in remarkable condition with exquisite honeyed, glazed interior : superb as a drinks cooler for parties or a planter indoors (we think it is too good for sustained outdoor use and have another, gorgeously weathered, for outdoors at £645). As a decorative object in its own right it is fabulous.
Lovely provenance : on moving to Devon, the respected studio potter Rosemary Wren (1922-2013; daughter of early studio potters Denise and Henry Wren) saw it and fell in love with its form, colour and glaze and made an exchange with its owner, a Barnstaple farmer, for it of a pot she threw specially.
Small, individual splashes of smooth glaze to the rough exterior testify the day and hand that made this vessel 150 years ago.
These salters of distinctive shape are rare and absolutely unique to Devon - to find one in this condition is astonishing.
