Description
Extraordinary pair of stone balls from the moat of a Cinq Ports castle in Kent, recovered in 1970s when the castle's moat was drained for renovation works. So these balls, carved 800 years ago, lay submerged for centuries after their assault on the castle walls, catapulted from the trebuchet engine. Beautifully marked, slightly elliptical, quite exceptional both decoratively and historically.
