Carved in lignum vitae, sculptural piece or doorstop
English Q3 1800s Sold

H 23cm (9") W 14.5 cm (5.75"). Weight 2.1 kg

A rare, especially large turnpin carved in lignum vitae - a wood of beautifully waved and extremely tight grain (denser than water), prized for extreme durability, smoothness and richness in natural oils. Turnpins were used in C19th for shaping lead - flaring pipes, curving sheets and sculpting. This exceptionally sized example makes a graceful, effective doorstop or simply a decorative piece of quiet presence.
